PRODUCT
The rugged series is a set of units consisting of a cross, point, cross + point combo, and 3x360 laser. This set was designed to have stable bases, with rubber edge protection and thick ridged plastic panels for improved grip and durability. The goal was to augment a simple utilitarian design with rounded shapes, contrasting details, and striking patterns in both form and color.
PROCESS
These units were developed based on what I learned designing the PLS 3x360: simple overall shapes with intricacies in the finer details. To have the aesthetic principles apply to a whole product line, I had to make sure each unit echoed the set’s styles regardless of how the form had to change. This included cutting the T-shaped slot for the cross laser, and changing the proportion of the point laser’s top and bottom sections. The cross + point combo took the most altering, as the combination of the form I designed for the cross and point meant the battery had to be moved to the bottom. The end result was a harmonious set of rugged yet visually appealing laser units.
