PROJECT

The goal for this project was to design a fire extinguisher that would fit the environment of a specific location. I was assigned a pet store, and I chose to focus on one that sells fish. During the completion of the fire extinguisher I focused on matching the aesthetics of the object with its intended location, as well taking care with the handmaking of the form.

PRODUCT

My fire extinguisher was a oblong polygonal form, with angles towards the back meant to evoke the shape of a fish’s fins. the handles fits within the fins, and can be wielded with another hand supporting the front.

PROCESS

I began iterating on shapes and forms that expressed the idea of an aquarium; a lot of early ideas were based on fish, fish tanks, and devices that looked like they belonged in the water.

I focused on a split top-bottom symmetrical form as I moved into model making, but I felt that my first attempts were either too boxy or too organic. I eventually found my most promising direction when I began abstracting the general shape of a fish into an angular yet streamlined form.

The final design came through refinement of proportions and angles and the reduction of all surface details. The result was a clean, utilitarian fire extinguisher with a defined aquatic shape that would look at home next to tanks full of fish.
